Winecoff Hotel Fire Cause of Death Report
This detailed report divides the 119 fatalities of the Winecoff Hotel fire into three categories. The number of deaths due to burns and suffocation are about equal, with injuries being the least cause of death. An important fact to remember, though, is that included in the injury column are those victims who jumped from the upper stories. If I'm not mistaken, the total on the report includes those who died of injuries both at the fire and later at the hospital. Since the final report was not submitted until January of 1947, I have to think that was the case. As you can see from this Department of Health report, the fire was no respecter of age.
The only female victim in the 70-79 age bracket was Grace Winecoff, wife of William Winecoff, who built the hotel in 1913.
They had lived in the hotel for 31 years and were both 76 at the time of the fire.
