First Step to Become a Firefighter

(Continued from How to become a firefighter ).

The first step you need to take to become a firefighter is to examine who you are on the inside.

The reason I make that statement is because there is more to being a firefighter than certifications and uniforms. It is who you are deep down inside. It is your character.

You must be honest with yourself and see if you truly have the character of a firefighter.

You need to do a gut check.

Start by asking yourself these questions:

Why do I want to be a firefighter?

How well do I handle stress?

What are my thoughts on death and dying?

Am I quick to judge others?

Who can I depend on to be a strong support system (home, spouse, friends)?

If you notice, all of the above questions require you to look at yourself.

There is certainly a physical component to the job but what I think is even more important is the mental aspect.

If the mental part is not right, well, the rest is going to be pretty tough.

Let's take a look at character, the first step to become a firefighter.
