Fire Training, Key to Success

"How to excel in the fire service"

Quality fire training is one of the major key components of firefighters who have achieved success within the fire service.

Whether it has been at the fire academy, specialized firefighter training or online fire officer training, the extra knowledge gained has made all the difference in the world.

If your goal is to excel in the fire service, then focus your efforts on quality firefighter training.

What about the person who is just beginning their career as a firefighter? Well, I have some extremely good news for you!

There is a ton of fire training available that will help propel you through the ranks.

First of all, most fire departments today have their own fire academy to train the new recruits. Based on the curriculum taught at the academy, students go from knowing absolutely nothing about fire fighting to becoming a certified firefighter.

Even if a fire department is not able to fund their own fire academy, there are state firefighter training schools available. Some of the state fire academies even provide dormitories for out of town students.

Generally, if a student is a member of a local fire department, the training, food and lodging at the state fire academy is free of charge.

In addition to the fire academy, there are fire department courses available at local colleges and technical schools. The selection of fire service classes available include everything from building construction to incident command.

The good thing about these classes is that firefighters have the option of taking just a few specialized courses or getting a full Fire Science degree.

Once you become a firefighter and are assigned to a station, you will continue receiving firefighting training through in-service training.

In-service training classes can be conducted by the station officer or one of your department's training officers. Generally, the topic of the classes are geared towards a specific skill oriented task such as: hose lays, forcible entry, ventilation, etc.

Those members of the fire service who are in the upper management ranks may want to consider the Executive Fire Officer (EFO)Program. The EFO is a four-year program offered through the National Fire Academy.

Whether you are a rookie or a veteran fire chief, quality fire training is the key to your success in the fire service.
