Majority injured or killed are women.

Highest Incident in the Home
Over 38% originate in bedrooms.

Winter Holiday Season
December has the most candle fires.

Major Causes of Candle Fires
Most fires are caused by error or negligence.

The above data provided by the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) reinforces the need for fire education and prevention involving candles.

In terms of overall fires, more than 23,000 fires per year are attributed to candles. (Over 1/3 of these originated in the bedroom ).

As a result of candle fires, there are approximately 165 deaths that occur annually.

In order to help reduce the number of injuries and deaths it is important to remember the following:

Keep Clear of Combustibles
Candles should not be used near
any materials that could ignite.

Make Sure Candle is Out
Ensure that all candles are fully
extinguished after use.

Children and Pets
Candles should be kept away from
children and pets.

Use Proper Candleholder
Candleholders should be made of materials
such as ceramic, glass or a sturdy metal.

Never Leave Candles Unattended
Extinguish all candles before leaving
the house or going to bed.

Do Not Use Lit Candles on a Tree
Always keep any type of flame away from
Christmas trees.

Use a Candle Snuffer
Prevents hot wax from splattering.

Place on a Sturdy, Heat-resistant Surface
Helps to avoid heat damage.

By providing the community with practical ways of implementing fire safety involving candles, the occurrence of fire related injuries and death can be reduced.

As firefighters, we must not only educate the public through fire prevention tips but we must set an example in our own home as well.
