Fire Safety Tips: Bedroom
Although often overlooked, the bedroom requires special attention when it comes to fire safety. According to the U.S. Fire Administration
USFA,
nearly 600 fatalities occur each year as a result of fires involving the bedroom. In order to help reduce the number of fire related deaths and injuries, each sleeping area should be evaluated according to the following list: Electrical Misuse Poor maintenance can cause fires. Careless Smoking Never smoke in bed. Children Playing with Matches Results in over 35,000 fires annually. Smoke Alarms They can save your life. Home Escape Plan Practice your home escape plan.
In addition to the tips listed above you may also want to consider replacing your mattress. As of July 2007, a new federal standard requires that mattresses be made of materials that will reduce flame spread in the event of a fire. This law was brought about by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in an effort to reduce the severity of mattress fires. The
CPSC
predicts that this new standard could save as many as 270 lives a year. As you can see, checking for potential fire hazards in the bedroom can help to reduce the 4,000 fire fatalities that occur in the United States each year.
