Winecoff Hotel Fire

I first discovered The Winecoff Hotel Fire: The Untold Story of America's Deadliest Hotel Fire while browsing through the book section of a local thrift store.

Being a firefighter with the Atlanta Fire department, I was naturally drawn to this historical fire that had claimed so many lives.

As I began skimming through the pages of the book, I couldn't help but be drawn deeper and deeper into the story.

Everything from the black and white photos, to the individual accounts of those who were at the hotel the night of the fire made me want to read more.

I quickly realized that in less than 5 minutes I had become hooked.

Unfortunately, this particular copy of the book was not in the best condition. The cover was torn in a couple of places and there was a huge coffee stain (I'm guessing it was coffee) right in the middle of the book.

Nonetheless I bought it anyways.

Note:Although I had read some of the book while still in the thrift store, I wasted no time in devouring the rest of the story as soon as I got home.

Meet the Authors

A few months after reading the story of the Winecoff Hotel fire, I approached Firehouse magazine about writing an article regarding the 60th anniversary of the fire. After all, who better than an Atlanta firefighter to write a story about the Winecoff?

During the research for that article I was able to meet the co-authors of the book, Sam Heys and Allen Goodwin.

These two gentlemen are the most down-to-earth people you could ever meet. Their warm and friendly conversation quickly won me over and we have been friends ever since.

It did not take me long to discover that Sam and Allen are walking encyclopedias when it comes to the Winecoff Hotel fire.

Both of them can rattle off names and dates regarding the people and events surrounding that tragic night.

Fortunately for the rest of us they have not kept this vast historical knowledge to themselves. You can read about it in The Winecoff Hotel Fire: The Untold Story of America's Deadliest Hotel Fire.

Brand New Autographed Copy

One of the really good things that came from meeting Sam and Allen was finding out that there are still copies of the book available.

Although The Winecoff Hotel Fire: The Untold Story of America's Deadliest Hotel Fire is no longer in print, there are still some brand-new copies (no coffee stains) to be had.

Even better, these are signed copies.

Both Sam Heys and Allen Goodwin were gracious enough to autograph the books and make them available to those who would like to learn more about this tragic fire.
